Privacy Policy

Last updated: April 2026

This privacy policy explains how I, Ben White, handle your information across my websites, web applications, and mobile apps (collectively "Products").

My approach: I build privacy-first products. I collect the minimum data necessary, store it locally on your device wherever possible, and never sell or share personal information with third parties.

Who I am

I am Ben White, an independent developer based in Cheshire, England. I am the data controller for any personal data processed through my Products.

You can contact me at benwhite.lab@gmail.com.

General principles

Across all my Products, I follow these principles:

Product-specific information

Different Products may handle data differently. This section describes the specific data practices for each.

Mobile App

Sunlight - Daylight Tracker

No data collected Local storage only

Sunlight calculates sunrise and sunset times based on your location. Your coordinates are stored only on your device and are never transmitted anywhere.

Permissions used:

Data collected: None. All preferences are stored locally on your device.

Mobile App

Card Stash - Loyalty Card Wallet

No data collected Local storage only

Card Stash stores your loyalty and membership card barcodes on your device. All data is encrypted at rest using AES-256, with the encryption key stored in your device's secure hardware (iOS Keychain or Android Keystore).

Card Stash makes zero network calls. No analytics, no crash reporting, no remote configuration, no data transmission of any kind. Your cards never leave your device unless you explicitly export them.

Permissions used:

Export and import: When you export your cards, the file is encrypted with a passphrase you choose (Argon2id key derivation, AES-256-GCM encryption). The passphrase is never stored on your device. The encrypted file is shared via your device's share sheet - Card Stash does not control or have access to where you send it.

Payment card protection: Card Stash automatically detects credit and debit card numbers using Luhn validation and BIN detection, and rejects them. Payment card numbers are never stored.

Data collected: None. All card data and preferences are stored locally on your device, encrypted at rest. No data is transmitted to any server.

Open source: Card Stash is open source under the MIT licence. You can inspect the full source code to verify these claims.

Mobile App

Trail Sparks - Family Scavenger Hunts

Minimal data Local storage only

Trail Sparks generates AI-adapted scavenger hunts for family walks. All hunt data, preferences, and history are stored locally on your device.

What is sent to the server: When generating a new hunt, the app sends the following to a Cloudflare Worker API proxy:

This data is used solely to construct a prompt for the AI model (Claude Haiku) and is not stored on the server. The Worker is stateless and discards all request data after responding.

What is NOT sent:

Permissions used:

Third-party processing: Hunt generation requests are forwarded to the Anthropic API (Claude Haiku) via a Cloudflare Worker. Anthropic's privacy policy and API data usage policy apply to this processing. Anthropic does not use API inputs to train models.

Data collected: No personal data is collected or stored on any server. All hunt history, preferences, and item library data is stored locally on your device and can be deleted by uninstalling the app.

Website

benwhite.co and lab.benwhite.co

Minimal data

My personal website and experiments lab.

Cloudflare Web Analytics: I use Cloudflare Web Analytics for privacy-friendly, cookieless analytics. It collects aggregated page view and visitor data without using cookies or tracking individual users. This runs automatically on all pages and does not require consent.

Google Analytics: I also use Google Analytics (via Google Tag Manager) to understand how visitors use my sites. This helps me improve content and identify technical issues. Google Analytics collects:

This data is aggregated and I cannot identify individual visitors. Google Analytics uses cookies to distinguish between visitors.

Managing your preferences: When you first visit, you'll see a banner asking for consent. Your choice is remembered for future visits. The cookie banner controls Google Analytics only - Cloudflare Web Analytics is cookieless and runs regardless of your consent choice. You can also install the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

Hosting logs: My hosting provider (Cloudflare) may collect standard server logs including IP addresses for security purposes. These are automatically deleted after a short retention period.

Cookies: I ask for your consent before setting any cookies. If you accept, Google Analytics sets cookies to measure website usage. If you decline, no cookies are set and no analytics data is collected. No advertising or tracking cookies from other third parties are used.

Web Applications

Interactive tools and experiments

Local storage only

Tools like the Goostrey Daylight Visualiser, calculators, and other interactive experiments.

Data collected: None transmitted to me. Some tools may use your browser's local storage to remember preferences (e.g., your selected location). This data stays in your browser and can be cleared via your browser settings.

Data I do NOT collect

Unless explicitly stated for a specific Product, I do not collect:

Third-party services

My Products may rely on third-party services for distribution and hosting:

Service Purpose Their privacy policy
Google Play Android app distribution Google Privacy Policy
Apple App Store iOS app distribution Apple Privacy Policy
Google Analytics Website usage statistics Google Privacy Policy
Cloudflare Web Analytics Cookieless website analytics Cloudflare Privacy Policy
Cloudflare Website hosting, API proxy Cloudflare Privacy Policy
Anthropic AI content generation (Trail Sparks) Anthropic Privacy Policy

Your use of these platforms is governed by their respective privacy policies, which are separate from this policy.

Children's privacy

My Products are not directed at children under 13, though they may be suitable for use by children. I do not knowingly collect personal information from children. Since most of my Products collect no personal data at all, there is no data at risk.

Your rights under UK GDPR

Under the UK General Data Protection Regulation and the Data Protection Act 2018, you have the following rights:

For most of my Products, no personal data is collected or stored on my systems, so these rights are automatically satisfied. Any data that exists is on your own device and under your control.

To exercise any of these rights, or if you have questions, contact me at benwhite.lab@gmail.com. I will respond within one month as required by law.

Data security

For data stored locally on your device, security is provided by your device's operating system and, where applicable, by additional encryption within the app itself. Card Stash, for example, encrypts all stored data with AES-256 using a key held in the device's secure hardware. I recommend keeping your device updated and using appropriate security measures (PIN, biometrics, encryption).

For any data processed through my websites, I use HTTPS encryption for all connections.

Data retention

Since I collect minimal or no personal data:

International transfers

My hosting providers may process data outside the UK. Where this occurs, appropriate safeguards are in place as required by UK GDPR, typically through the provider's standard contractual clauses or adequacy decisions.

Changes to this policy

I may update this privacy policy to reflect changes to my Products or legal requirements. The "Last updated" date at the top will change when updates are made.

For significant changes affecting your rights, I will provide prominent notice where practical (such as a notice on the relevant Product).

Complaints

If you are unhappy with how I have handled your data, please contact me first at benwhite.lab@gmail.com so I can try to resolve your concerns.

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO):
